Conservative youth group Turning Point USA (TPUSA) has deleted a tweet mocking wearing protective masks after its co-founder, Bill Montgomery, died of complications from the coronavirus.
On Wednesday two friends of Montgomery confirmed to Politico that he had died, aged 80, of complications from the disease.
The previous evening TPUSA chairman Charlie Kirk announced Montgomery's death and paid tribute to him, describing him as an 'American hero.'
'He touched the lives of thousands of young Americans and I will miss him greatly,' wrote Kirk.

Kirk, then aged 18, established the group alongside Montgomery in 2012.
The conservative group has taken a critical stance towards public safety measures designed to slow the spread of the disease, such as wearing masks.
The anti-mask tweet was sent on July 28, the day that Montgomery's death was announced. It featured a meme of movie star Nicholas Cage and the message 'me not wearing a mask while a leftist screams at me from their car from across the parking lot at whole foods.'

It is not clear why the anti-mask tweet was deleted. Its messaging was in keeping with TPA's skepticism of anti-coronavirus protective measures.
Some critics of the group had sent mocking replies to the post which mentioned Montgomery's death.
Despite his skepticism, Kirk's position has not been to reject every measure to mitigate the disease. Microsoft teams word online.

He has said that those at high risk, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, should self-isolate.
In a March op-ed for Fox News said that young people not observing coronavirus protective measures were 'endangering an entire society.'
But he has been highly critical of masks, and on his podcast Sunday he said that mandating mask wearing was wrong.
'Do not force me to wear a mask, it's that simple. I'm not gonna do it, I'm not,' he said.

In June President Donald Trump was criticised after appearing at a TPUSA rally in a church in Phoenix, Arizona, not wearing a mask.
